CUBAN FILM SEASON AT THE LIBRARY THEATRE

Jun 5
Thu 7:30 PM
Description

The Birmingham International Film Society is a new organisation run by regular MAC cinemagoers. Our goal is to offer a programme of new and classic foreign language films.

In 1959, one of the first priorities of Fidel Castro was to initiate film production in Cuba. The result has been an explosion of talent and a range of entertaining films which explore fundamental issues in open and provocative ways. Very rapidly Habana became the power house of the New Latin American Cinema with the establishment of the International Film School and the annual Habana Film Festival. The writings of Julio Garcia Espinosa were seminal to the development of Independent Cinema in Latin America and Britain in the 80's.

More recently European money has enabled Cuba to continue to play an important role in world cinema.

12 CHAIRS (Dir : Tomas Alea 1962) BIRMINGHAM PREMIERE

A wonderfully funny film by Cuba's leading director . The story concerns the hunt for some hidden jewels. Set in contemporary Habana it is also a fascinating guided tour of the new society. This is comedy in the best traditons of the 20's and infinitely better than the Mel Brooks version of the same story.

One of many film versions of Cuba's past from the director of 'Lucia'. Amanda, daughter of a wealthy slave owner falls in love with a radical journalist. Good music track from Leo Brouwer.

DEATH OF A BUREAUCRAT (Dir:Tomas Alea 1966)

Juan, a poor farmer lives by his wits...as a circus performer, bull fighter, church functionary...joins the revolutionary movement... The film is a fun journey through film genres, with our hero appearing in them all!
